Behind the Scenes | 2014

Every time I come across a photo of a second shooter, assistant, or me shooting, I just laugh. Shooting weddings and other sessions is exhausting! You start out looking all cute and great for the first part of the day and then by the end of the night you are just a wreck! You’re on your feet for 10-12 hours with little food and break and you’re brain is in constant thinking mode, anticipating the next move, shot, and reorganizing all of your thoughts as you are flexible in the moment as things are always changing. This year I’ve danced my legs off, rocked my ears deaf, broken a lens in half, nearly killed two camera bodies, fallen too many times to count, climbed walls and trees, Macgyvered a flowergirl’s dress back together, rebuilt several hairdos, and so much more. It’s been an eventful and great year! :D

I’ve had the amazing honor to have some talented shooters come with me this year. This year was especially fun because I went from being 1-8 months pregnant through the shooting season! Here I am typing this post and could go into labor any hour now. I am so grateful for these talented people! Most of the photos below you will see are from them and at the end of the post you will see some of the faces that made this year so great. Great big THANKS go out to Peter Conrey from Memphis, Nina Price from Philadelphia, Rebecca Dodson from Memphis, Mark Arnold from Dallas, and Jim Heine from Philadelphia for coming in this year to shoot with me!!!!

I also want to say a crazy, ENORMOUS, thank you to my husband, Andrew. He works his own full-time job only to come home many times and have me drag him to weddings on the weekend and shoots on weeknights. He is my light tester, my bag carrier, my drink and food getter, my use the bathroom reminder, my setter-upper and tearer-downer, my driver, my sounding board, and my biggest supporter. Without him this season or any season, I couldn’t have done it all. Andrew, there is no other person I would rather come alongside me for these high-paced, whirlwind times! I love you!

Katie + Tom | Wedding

All love and joy – that’s what I have for this couple! Katie had booked her wedding for late fall 2015 and then called me just a few months ago saying they decided that it was silly to wait so long and they wanted to marry on the day they met – New Year’s Eve. I have always wanted to shoot a New Year’s Eve wedding but this year was a little different – I was gonna be super pregnant but she kept saying, “I just want you!”. Well, girl, you got me plus some! Luckily no baby was born in the production of this wedding. ;)

This day was absolutely awesome. I loved the intimate, joyful, and elegant ceremony. The wedding party was incredibly fun and the reception was one of a kind. Katie’s father, Tom, sang Katie and Tom’s first dance song as well as his own dance with Katie. It was precious! What better way to ring in the new year with old friends, new family, and a new last name! Congratulations you two!!!!

Special thanks to my friend, Jim Heine with Hoffer Photography in Philadelphia for coming down to shoot with me this time! I love his view of Katie and her dad coming down the aisle to Tom, and the concept for a portrait of Katie and Tom with the beautiful Orpheum lights floating behind them. Another favorite of mine is the two views him and I had when Katie and her father hugged for their Father/Daughter dance.

Best of Documentary | 2014

These are my top 10 favorite moments of 2014. Each has been given a title and a caption to give an inside look of how the images came to be.

Best of Documentary – 2014

Kim waits for Ken to ascend from the room so they can have their first meet. We had no idea which elevator he was coming down in and just when the doors opened and he walked out, Kim peeked around the corner with her giddy grin and asked me, “Is that him?”

“The Pain Felt Around the World”

Covering Amelia’s birth story was one of the highlights of my year. Here, Laura is comforted by her mother through contractions as her husband, Jon, tries to relieve her pain as he is overwhelmed with emotion through the labor. Such a humbling, encouraging, and miraculous time to witness another mother give birth.

“The Girls”
Natalie adjusts “the girls” as “the girls” make their way up to ceremony.

“Runs in the Family”
The fabulous Bluegrass band entertaining at the reception sends Stacey, her mom, and grandmother bursting into laughter with a hilarious original song written about the bandleader’s neighbor.

“That Moment You Realize”

With all the hustle and bustle of a wedding day, Molly finally realizes “this is it” when she places the veil on and is overcome with excitement to get married.

Austin exercises every ounce of self-control he has to not turn around until the right moment as Catherine’s attendant struggles to place her veil on the balcony for their first look.

“Here We Go”
Carolyn is calmed by her sister as the butterflies get stronger just minutes away from ceremony time.

“Happy Dance”

After saying “I Do” and retreating to the back room, Whitney and Rei celebrate with a happy dance, complete with high-fives, high-stepping, and high-jumping.

“Brushin Up”
Kesava and a groomsman brush up their hygiene before any kissin’.

“One Ring to Remind Us All”
Matt can’t stop looking at his ring as him and Stacey recess from the ceremony, where he was overjoyed to make Stacey his bride.
