Behind the Scenes | 2015

Here’s to another year! 2015 – You were great!

I overcame my biggest fear of pain and gave a natural, unmedicated birth to our second daughter, Elloree in February. Our oldest daughter, Layla turned three this year! We stripped our little vintage kitchen down to the studs and began our first major DIY renovation (almost complete). I picked up music again after a 3 year hiatus. I began mentoring someone. And we decided to slow things down to enjoy time with our family, as we have been working nonstop for the last 9 years. But slowing down didn’t mean much other than we were just more energized when we worked!

Here’s to you, crazy-face, run-on-gummy-bears-and-coffee, think-faster-than-you-can-do, Feauxtographier… Amy…

You’re nuts. Really. You really don’t care what people think of what you’re doing because you know what the end result looks like.
You’re critical on yourself. Every shoot you do is a piece of you for your client. You wonder if they’ll love it. It feels great to create for them.
You risk you looking like a zombie road kill if it means that your client looks great.
And this is proof…

Here’s to you, My hater-of-dressing-up, equipment-wrangling, muscle-man Hubby… Andrew…

You not only work on your time off with me, but you do it with a smile. Well, at least funny faces. :)
You are patient with me and others and to the situation at hand. You never complain, though there are many reasons to.
You are considerate and kind. Maybe it’s that Mississippi upbringing. Maybe it’s Maybeline.
You are the best light tester and I’m sorry I have made you stand in the middle of empty dance floors while I test lights.
You are my better half. You are more than I could ever ask for. You are fan-freaking-tastic.

Here’s to you, My real-talking, no-nonsense taking, pint-sized Philly girl… Nina…

You work harder than any other shooter I know and always push yourself and me to do better.
You got my back, you pick up slack, you take a lot of crap from crappy people.
You’re graceful, loving, self-less, and I’m honored to have shot with you this year and even more so to call you friend.
You’re a perfect star in my book (and in the Photobooth).

Here’s to you, My fun-loving, fearless, faithful friend… Marie…

Working with you when I can is always a joy!
You were willing to go buy a new $400 pump after mine was misplaced by wedding guests.
You bring me into a huddle and send me out focused just like a coach.
You are hilarious, beautiful, and I can’t believe you say yes to these things I ask you to do.

Here’s to you, My eager-to-conquer, talking-light-stand Asian flower… Madison…

You are willing to dive into anything head first without fear.
You have revived a love of learning and passion in me.
You are kind, sensitive, and energetic.
The world better watch out for you, ’cause you fierce, guuuurrrrl.
I am honored to have had you along with us this year.

And here’s to you, awesome security guard… Uh… Don’t know your name…
You were there to test that light like a boss when no one else was around.
You didn’t ask questions. You didn’t arrest me. You just stood and posed like a champ.
You keep on keepin-on!

Behind the Scenes | 2014

Every time I come across a photo of a second shooter, assistant, or me shooting, I just laugh. Shooting weddings and other sessions is exhausting! You start out looking all cute and great for the first part of the day and then by the end of the night you are just a wreck! You’re on your feet for 10-12 hours with little food and break and you’re brain is in constant thinking mode, anticipating the next move, shot, and reorganizing all of your thoughts as you are flexible in the moment as things are always changing. This year I’ve danced my legs off, rocked my ears deaf, broken a lens in half, nearly killed two camera bodies, fallen too many times to count, climbed walls and trees, Macgyvered a flowergirl’s dress back together, rebuilt several hairdos, and so much more. It’s been an eventful and great year! :D

I’ve had the amazing honor to have some talented shooters come with me this year. This year was especially fun because I went from being 1-8 months pregnant through the shooting season! Here I am typing this post and could go into labor any hour now. I am so grateful for these talented people! Most of the photos below you will see are from them and at the end of the post you will see some of the faces that made this year so great. Great big THANKS go out to Peter Conrey from Memphis, Nina Price from Philadelphia, Rebecca Dodson from Memphis, Mark Arnold from Dallas, and Jim Heine from Philadelphia for coming in this year to shoot with me!!!!

I also want to say a crazy, ENORMOUS, thank you to my husband, Andrew. He works his own full-time job only to come home many times and have me drag him to weddings on the weekend and shoots on weeknights. He is my light tester, my bag carrier, my drink and food getter, my use the bathroom reminder, my setter-upper and tearer-downer, my driver, my sounding board, and my biggest supporter. Without him this season or any season, I couldn’t have done it all. Andrew, there is no other person I would rather come alongside me for these high-paced, whirlwind times! I love you!

Behind the Scenes | 2012-2013

What a year.. wait… two years it has been! You see, this year and last year have completely melted together as one big mega-year. Believe it or not, one week ago today, my daughter turned one. ONE. That means I’ve been a new-mama for ONE WHOLE YEAR. That means before that, my body was cooking up a baby for 9 MONTHS. So, it would be only natural that all that time (two years, for all intents and purposes) has just collided and become a huge blur of crazy goodness. After Layla was born last December, some of the non-pressing things like the end-of-the-year blogging, just didn’t happen. So, we are going to make up for it this winter. There are going to be some awesome things hitting this little corner of the blog-sphere. So, hang on!

Today we are starting it all out with something I’ve never done before: a Behind-the-Scenes blogpost.

For over 6 years, I have pretty much shot everything alone with only the very rare assistant or my husband coming along. Well, when we found out we were pregnant in April 2012, I decided to shake things up a bit and Andrew accompanied me on many weddings in the 2012 year. Not only that, but throughout 2012 and 2013, some of my great photographer friends came and shot with me. Well, I started to love having someone along, after shooting 6 years alone, it’s so fun to have another creative to support you and encourage you on a long work day. So, many of these behind the scenes images are from shooting with them over these two years. Without further adieu, I give you the first ever, amydale photography Behind the Scenes…

And there are no words to express how much these people (and more) mean to me. They are more than great photographers, they are great friends, and my husband. HA! I am so humbled and honored that I would have friends that would fly from Baltimore, Philadelphia, Wisconsin, and even Canada to come shoot with me, whether it be in a time of need or for fun. Not to mention a couple of them have come multiple times, but I think it’s for the BBQ. I would like to say I could have made it through the last two years without them, that I could have done it on my own, but I’d be lying. I thank God so dearly for their friendship and am thankful that they just didn’t step into my life, but came alongside me to serve my awesome couples with me.

And to my husband… I try to let you rest on wedding days, and some days you do, but for the days you don’t and you’re with me… who’s going to test my light, hold the flowers, center the backdrop, carry my bag, help me climb a wall, help me get out of a hole, tell me when I have mud on my butt, run home because I forgot the guestbook on the office desk, fix me a bag of snacks, make sure I’m drinking enough water, run up and down a hill because I can’t decide what lens I want out of my bag I left at the bottom of the hill, buy Chick-fil-a and down it in two seconds with me, get my plate of food at the reception so I don’t pass out after 10hours of working??? ;)
It could be someone else, but I’m glad it’s you.
